SpivDiia: How We Co-Founded a Nation-Level NGO in 4 Days

<h1>A Challenge to Kick Start NGO in 4 Days&nbsp;</h1>The 2022 invasion of Ukraine has left many organizations and individuals lacking resources. We’ve seen a problem: a lack of coordination in supplying logistics and demand gathering.<figure class="media"><oembed url="https://youtu.be/rkVyiOPa_wk"></oembed></figure>That’s why we dared to make a nationwide startup SpivDiia. And launched it in just 4 days.In translation from Ukrainian, SpivDiia literally means Co-Action. Because that’s what is the mission of the project: help Ukrainians use their own resources to help each other.But the path from the bottom up was hectic. Here are the things we figured out along the way.&nbsp; Learn it from the first hands of SpivDiia Co-Founder, Qream’s CEO &amp; Creative Director, Bohdan Paladiichuk (featuring partners &amp; Qs).&nbsp;<h2>Noticing a Crucial Problem&nbsp;</h2>The knowledge of the coordination issues came from first-hand experience.&nbsp; Bohdan was helping Ukrainians coordinate food and supplies delivery, by his own means. When coordinating a truck of resources to Lviv’s hub, he realized there might be somebody bringing help there too.&nbsp;All such efforts pointed to a systematic problem in volunteering at that time: lack of cohesive action. There was no record of fulfilled &amp; not fulfilled requests. SpivDiia was envisioned as a means of responding to any social problem fast &amp; with superior coordination. The NGO aimed to convert the collaboration of Ukrainians into a digital product that links givers &amp; receivers.&nbsp;This idea also popped up in conversation with Iryna Tulyakova, who suggested the action should indeed be taken, and she was all in to kickstart it. Iryna saw the problem on a bigger scale too. We chose a website as a tech solution, with the back-end to be covered by a system by Ukrainian startup Quincefin that was capable of doing the task.The functionality was more important than flashy visuals. During the first months, 70% of people browsed SpivDiia from their phones in bomb shelters, basements and underground subway stations, so we had to ensure they could also initiate a voice call.Copy and design were made in record 48 hours. Bohdan created an idea for a basic site structure and sent it to Designer Denys. Visual direction was about combining a simple NGO-like look and Ukrainian non-cliche visuals. The task was to create a convenient main page where people could both ask for help and request help with two panel buttons.&nbsp;&nbsp;<blockquote>Bohdan recounts:&nbsp; “I focused on an easy solution that would also be, catchy, nice and meet the high bar of cool digital projects of our government. It had to be Ukraine-themed, but not in a tacky way. It was important to avoid cliches that vulgarize Ukrainian cultural heritage. We also added emojis to give people a small serotonin boost. I worried about choosing the right images for the design: they should give hope but not be too happy or sad.”</blockquote><blockquote><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715077638/19659_ff8807d44b_221b1a872f.png" alt="19659_ff8807d44b.png" srcset="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715077638/thumbnail_19659_ff8807d44b_221b1a872f.png 245w,https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715077638/small_19659_ff8807d44b_221b1a872f.png 500w,https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715077638/medium_19659_ff8807d44b_221b1a872f.png 750w,https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715077638/large_19659_ff8807d44b_221b1a872f.png 1000w," sizes="100vw"> &nbsp;Here’s a recap by our Q &amp; SpivDiia’s Project Manager of Design &amp; Web Development, Eugene Berezhnoy: “Working on SpivDiia was also different since it was the first time I was not just delivering a site but analyzing its performance &amp; supporting it all the way. There also was a feeling of responsibility since the website was visited by up to a million people monthly. It was important to do super-duper great testing and coordinate all the updates. One mistake in communication could be an embarrassment to the cause.”</blockquote><h2>Software That Browses Under Bombs&nbsp;</h2>We had to use the simplest low-code apps at the start since the project was extremely urgent.&nbsp;Another important thing was to make the system resilient to hacking. Moreover, the site was made fit to browse under any conditions: even for people stuck in underground bomb shelters with old phones and bad Internet.&nbsp; Skyrocketing Scale&nbsp;SpivDiia got thousands of requests and hundreds of thousands of website visits during its first weeks. The team had to come up with a simple verification algorithm to process all the applications. Bohdan officially registered SpivDiia as a fund asap. Iryna &amp; Bohdan had to create a call center &amp; look for donors to cover all the requests.&nbsp;<blockquote>&nbsp;Bohdan says: “We were morally ready to reach great scale from the very inception. It was an immediate response to a spontaneous problem.”</blockquote><h2>Scaling Through Subprojects&nbsp;</h2>In a short period of a few weeks, SpivDiia gained a reputation as a reliable platform that helps to orderly deliver resources for poignant needs.&nbsp;Other volunteers from different projects wanted to join SpivDiia and manage new branches. They were persuaded by our mission &amp; values. Hence, some subprojects were added over time, such as:<ul><li>SpivDiia Children</li><li>SpivDiia Hub&nbsp;</li><li>SpivDiia Shelter&nbsp;</li><li>SpivDiia Legal Support&nbsp;</li><li>SpivDiia Psychological Help&nbsp;</li><li>SpivDiia Employment&nbsp;</li><li>SpivDiia Entrepreneurers&nbsp;</li></ul>A simple &amp; well-formulated vision that resonated with people’s demands allowed the project to scale naturally.&nbsp;Even though divisions operate in completely different realms, they united under one umbrella of SpivDiia due to common beliefs &amp; goals.&nbsp;<h2>How the Project Works Now</h2>Basically, the formula is simple: P + P = people to people.First function: you can help.Do you have a spare puffer jacket you’re not gonna be wearing any time soon? Even though his company struggled after the outbreak of the war, Andriy donated 3000 yogurt beverages to locals made with his personal money.&nbsp;SpivDiia helped Andriy revive the business with a 2000 euro grant. Now, folks from Mykolaiv can have access to fresh &amp; tasty stuff sold &amp; made by a local invincible startup.&nbsp;<blockquote>That’s Andriy’s feedback on how SpivDiia was helpful to his small business:&nbsp; “SpivDiia was the first organization to give us help since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. With its support, we could start things afresh and breathe in new life into my project. International partners like German Henkel &amp; Polish Deloitte Foundation, among others. A multitude of Ukrainian businesses gave us endorsements &amp; donations, such as the most popular local marketplace Rozetka, the biggest private postal service Nova Post and many more.🤩 Good-willed creatives used their platforms for SpivDiia as well. That’s how &amp; why we managed to develop SpivDiia from a lean startup to a national ecosystem within a few months.<blockquote>From Bohdan’s perspective, it is about recognizing demand and using any available assets to give a response:&nbsp; “At the beginning of the full-scale war, everyone who wasn’t useful to others felt disgusted. So all SpivDiia team members were grateful for the opportunity to do something meaningful. The feeling of having an overwhelming amount of requests both demotivated and pushed forward.&nbsp;But now, SpivDiia is a launch pad for offering any services from Ukrainians to Ukrainians. We want to teach people how to help others, so people can see their own value. Crafting a Unique NFT Universe to Spark Engagement

Funky Wolves team wanted to shake up the NFT market with a new collection that would build a community around it. The issue was, how to make people feel FOMO &amp; be eager to join the movement? Our solution: an immersive website that puts you in the cyberpunk universe so you get a wolfish appetite for more.The initial request was two-folded: come up with a detailed concept for their universe &amp; a 3D site that tells this story.The goal of the website is to entice buying a Funky Pass: an exclusive permit to artworks’ presale. However, the site must also hook the client &amp; keep them in a loop to purchase, trade &amp; boast their wolves.&nbsp;<h2><img class="image_resized" style="width:100%;" src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715087524/ne_mozhe_vidirvatisya_i_tam_Funky_Wolves_0daf2415a1_e55ea619fe.png"> Audience Research: Learning How to Run With the Wolves</h2>We looked into who is the target audience of the NFT collection to design a website that leaves them passionate.Picture Andy, an all-American guy reaching his 30s who has nostalgia for old consoles, loves vaporwave aesthetic &amp; phase one Marvel movies. He’s tech-savvy &amp; wants to stay on top of the curve when it comes to making a bag online. However, buying NFTs for him is not cold cash. Andy craves thrill, excitement &amp; community building as much.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1696935321/avatar_b1d249c7fe.png" alt="avatar.png" srcset="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1696935322/thumbnail_avatar_b1d249c7fe.png 245w,https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1696935322/small_avatar_b1d249c7fe.png 500w,https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1696935322/medium_avatar_b1d249c7fe.png 750w,https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1696935322/large_avatar_b1d249c7fe.png 1000w," sizes="100vw">We made a site that would keep such NFT folk entertained &amp; captivated throughout the user journey.&nbsp;<h2>Creating a Universe Based on One Art Piece</h2>Initially, the Funky Wolves team had only a prototype of an artwork from a collection to set a visual direction.<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:100%;"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715087485/logo_93154a5af2_5d798aa700.png"></figure>We came up with two possible approaches: a post-apocalyptic forest and a futuristic city. After that, we crafted a storyline to show the UX &amp; present visual references for UI elements.&nbsp;As we went on with the forest concept, the task was to make the design immersive, like a first-person video game.<img class="image_resized" style="width:100%;" src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715087684/pics_of_collages_of_starih_variantiv_dizajnu_434d8cd62e_d2ffd9e8d4.png"> We sprang into action custom-drawing every leaf, bug or superhero movie easter egg for the site. Even the background should glue the eyes of the NFT guys to the screen &amp; make them crave more Funky Wolves content.&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:100%;"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715087598/pidsvicheni_rizni_malenki_elementi_2988516d0d_fec852c991.png"></figure><h2>Novel UX to Get You Scavenging in the Web Woods</h2>The site of competitors used 3D sparingly for a hero page background, but all other site functions were standard.To make the Funky Wolves site feel like a truly different world, we went a step further and made all parts of the user journey animated.The struggle was in optimization: how to make a flat illustration seem three-dimensional?To achieve this effect, we combined the 3D mechanics with parallax scrolling, a technique when foreground elements move faster compared to the backdrop. The placing of flat pictures in a 3D space added volume to the scene.The result: smooth transition from an opening logo to a hero screen, a coin machine to buy NFTs &amp; wolf den with a casino after making a purchase. <img class="image_resized" style="width:100%;" src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715086471/scene_3_70c9ba41d1_f8b603380b.png"> <img class="image_resized" style="width:100%;" src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715086701/scene_1_5134c932ef_d237b897c0.png"><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:100%;"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715087170/scene_2_bf129d5560_c8fdb3c627.png"></figure><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:100%;"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dyqiqikye/image/upload/v1715087637/scene_4_8eefee690d_7ff2c09b40.png"></figure>No need to wait until pages load: the user can scroll and browse all instantly.The site pages unfold as a cohesive story so that NFT hunters want to complete the payment to find out what sick scenes await them next.&nbsp;<h2>Smashing The Angel-Round Valuation With an Impressive Site</h2><ul><li>The Funky Wolves team used the website to raise $5 million in angel-round funding.</li><li>500 out of 500 collectible NFTs sold out.</li><li>The site’s storytelling helped to build a community around the collection of 173 unique owners.&nbsp;</li></ul>

It’s a very interesting task, isn’t it? That’s why I think it would be very useful for a tech founder/CEO to possess design skills to learn a couple of extremely important competencies that will help their business grow steadily.<h3>Creativity and innovation</h3>Unfortunately, internet culture and ignorant people in pursuit of money have desecrated these concepts, making them clichés. This is a shame because creativity and innovation are two of the main drivers of progress, which are linked by a simple logic: creativity is the ability to generate new ideas, approaches, and concepts that help solve existing problems in ways that did not exist before. Innovation is the process of transforming new ideas or concepts into real products, services, or processes. It’s very simple and complex at the same time.Creativity and the ability to innovate are the main tools of a designer. Let me give you a simple example: a large IT company approached us to create an identity for a low-code platform brand, which was meant to be an alternative to expensive full-code developers in large enterprise projects. But in the course of our research, we found that the challenge is not competition or usability, but the presence of so-called “citizen developers” — marketers, accountants, and HR specialists who know how to create software using low-code platforms. Instead of highlighting the product’s advantages, we offered to sell the product along with a course on low-code for employees of different departments to help them become more efficient. Now it’s not just a product, but a new hard skill for the next generation of employees.
